Very interesting. Isn’t the “avatar” personality thing actually a reflection of real life? We present ourselves in different ways to different people. The way I present myself as a teacher to my students is not the same as when I’m with friends or family or at work. Each “me” could be represented by a different “avatar”. It depends on the context. This can also be reflected online in the different contexts of facebook, gaming, blogging etc. The world is a stage and we are all actors as some fella once said. To some extent this is true and to a great extent it may be very true online. We live in a celebrity led X Factor style culture and FB for example gives quite a few people the chance to “glamourise” themselves. Bit like a school play 🙂 As long as we all know we are “actors” and using “avatars” I’m not sure if there’s much harm.
    Really interesting. Food for thought.
    Thanks

    • Hi David,

Thank you for your considerations on avatars. I absolutely agree with you (and that guy who once talked about the world being a stage 😉 but I also see a trend of people taking up the role of their online persona when off-line. Is it a question of mixing up roles? Of wearing the wrong hat in the wrong context? (Edward de Bono has a book on Thinking Hats).

I find that there are thin lines sometimes between identity, elaborated on-line personas and avatars. Nothing like our virtual world to make the issues of identity more complex, intricate and interesting to understand! 🙂

Some people have so many avatars they dont know who really are themselves. They always show up with a lovely disguise.

    • Hi Ana,

Thank you for visiting and leaving your view. You’re quite right regarding the play with visual avatars. On the other hand, perhaps individuals grow out of certain avatars and wish to have a more up-dated projection of who/what they are at a specific point in time.

Interesting observation – thank you for pointing that out! 🙂
